The Ibero-American University Foundation (FUNIBER) congratulates Dr. José Manuel Gil de Gálvez, who has received the honorary distinction of “Adopted Son” from the City Council of Nigüelas, in Granada, Spain. The resolution, unanimously approved by the full city council, recognizes his artistic career and his close and enduring cultural and musical ties to this municipality in the Lecrín Valley.
This designation represents the highest honorary distinction granted by Spanish municipal governments to individuals who, although not born in the town, have distinguished themselves through personal merit or services rendered for the benefit of the community. In this case, the recognition highlights more than two decades of active involvement, commitment, and cultural work in Nigüelas, where music has become an element of shared identity.
Highest Municipal Distinction
The recognition honors the intense cultural work spearheaded by Gil de Gálvez, who has contributed to the development and promotion of music in the municipality through his ongoing participation in initiatives that have made this town a leading destination for chamber and classical music.
As a conductor and violinist, he has actively participated in numerous concerts held in the municipality, including recitals performed alongside Concerto Málaga at the Church of San Juan Bautista, one of the most iconic venues in local cultural life. In addition, he directs the Lecrín Valley Concert Series, an initiative that keeps musical activity alive throughout the year and raises the profile of Nigüelas alongside that of other towns in the region.

Two Decades of Shared Music
This broader context of collaboration also includes the International Week of Spanish Chamber Music (FIAPMSE), founded in 2005 by the Hispania Música Foundation, with Gil de Gálvez serving as artistic director from its inception. Initially conceived as a traveling project, the festival received an exceptional welcome in Nigüelas and decided to establish its permanent headquarters there, where it celebrated its 22nd edition in 2026 with daily concerts, master classes, and seminars.
The festival’s continuity, combined with its educational work with young musicians, has fostered a constant exchange among artists, students, and residents. Far from being a one-time event, a relationship of trust and closeness has been built, which explains the warmth with which the town has embraced this cultural initiative.

Shared Recognition and the Future
Along with Maestro Gil de Gálvez, Marina Picazo Gutiérrez and Carlos Picazo Gutiérrez were recognized as Favorite Daughter and Son, respectively. Likewise, Alejandro Manzano Prieto, Juan Pablo Gamarro Martínez, and Jimena Gil Picazo received the distinction of Adoptive Sons and Daughter of Nigüelas.
Gil de Gálvez’s artistic and educational career is also linked to the work of FUNIBER’s Cultural Program, within the framework of the various musical and cultural initiatives in which the maestro participates. Through this collaboration, the Foundation has supported part of his artistic and pedagogical work, in line with its commitment to promoting culture, music, and the dissemination of knowledge.
In this context, and on the occasion of International Music Day, we at FUNIBER join in this well-deserved tribute and celebrate the honor bestowed upon Maestro Gil de Gálvez, which highlights a career marked by interpretive excellence, artistic leadership, and a dedication to education. His designation as an Honorary Citizen of Nigüelas also reflects the importance of the enduring ties between culture, education, and the local community—principles that the Foundation shares and promotes through its International University Network and its Cultural Program, through which it supports initiatives related to music, art, and the dissemination of knowledge.
