Dr. Álvaro Velarde participates in a study that defines key methodologies and content for training basketball coaches

Dr. Álvaro Velarde, international coordinator of the Sports Area at the Fundación Universitaria Iberoamericana (Ibero-American University Foundation, FUNIBER) and professor-researcher at the Universidad Europea del Atlántico (European University of the Atlantic, UNEATLANTICO), participated in a study that analyzes the design, content, and methodologies applied in basketball coach training programs at the international level.

Basketball, as a discipline characterized by its dynamism, high tactical demands, and strategic complexity, requires coaches capable of making decisions based on scientific evidence. In this context, coach training plays an essential role in improving player performance, developing talent, and optimizing training processes.

To date, federations and universities have implemented various training modalities: face-to-face classes, online modules, and combined formats (face-to-face and online). However, pedagogical criteria and standards vary between institutions and countries, so there is no common guide for designing coach training plans. This lack of reference makes it difficult to transition from models based on “explaining and repeating” to approaches that prioritize understanding the game and actively building knowledge.

In this context, the study in which Dr. Velarde participated aimed to identify the most relevant characteristics of existing training programs and evaluate the effectiveness of the methodologies used. To this end, a systematic review of the existing literature was conducted with a rigorous and methodologically sound approach.

In general terms, training needs depend on the level of experience: beginners require a solid foundation, while more experienced individuals need advanced updating and cross-cutting skills. Within this framework, content should be organized progressively according to the stage and level of those teaching and learning: at the initial levels, priority is given to fundamental skills and basic principles in attack and defense; later on, collective strategies, coordination between roles, and balance between phases become important, while maintaining individual principles as a basis.

Decision-making is a core competency and is enhanced by active and contextualized methodologies, small-scale situations close to reality, which integrate perception-action, continuous feedback, and problem-solving. Blended learning formats, which combine online study and on-court practice, are particularly effective in promoting meaningful and sustainable learning.

In assessment, it is advisable to go beyond written exams and incorporate authentic procedures that demonstrate competencies in real situations. Training must also be continuous and integrate formal and non-formal learning, including personal and environmental management skills due to their direct impact on team performance.

These guidelines inform the design of standardized programs by level and age; the selection of content and tasks; and the definition of competency-based assessment frameworks, leveraging blended environments and digital technologies to offer flexible, accessible, and learner-centered experiences.

This systematic review is an important contribution to the field of sports training, offering a comprehensive overview of current trends and needs in basketball coach education. The findings provide a solid basis for the development of more effective, sustainable programs that are aligned with the demands of modern sport.
