The Scientific Director of FUNIBER and UNEATLANTICO, Maurizio Battino, recently published the article “Three Amazonian palms as underestimated and little-known sources of nutrients, bioactive compounds and edible insects”.
This research, carried out by Battino and other collaborators, analyzes three species of Amazonian palms used for food and medicinal purposes: Mauritia flexuosa, Bactris gasipaes and Oenocarpus bataua.
Specifically, the study focuses on analyzing the fruits and oil obtained from these palms, as well as the larvae of R. palmarum that reproduce in them.
“Our goal is to present little-known information to demonstrate the potential of these palms as sources of plant and animal foods with high nutritional and functional values,” the article states.
Dr. Maurizio Battino has been recognized as one of the world’s most influential scientists for six consecutive years, according to the prestigious scientific review agency Clarivate Analytics.
