The Ibero-American University Foundation (FUNIBER), in its mission to promote quality higher education, participated in the commemoration of the fifth anniversary of the International University of Cuanza (UNIC), an institution that is part of its International University Network. This anniversary was marked by the holding of the First Scientific Conference, an event that highlighted the transformative role of academia in human and social development.
With the theme “Academia, Science, and Outreach: Their Contribution to Human Development,” the conference brought together local and national authorities, students, teachers, and community members. Among the prominent figures was the Provincial Governor of Bié, Dr. Celeste Elavoco David Adolfo, who highlighted the importance of higher education in the region’s progress.
FUNIBER, as a promoter of academic excellence, played a key role in the event through its collaboration in the ClinicalSIM project, which presented innovative simulation tools for nursing education. In addition, the conference “Maternal and Child Malnutrition in Angola,” given by professors Virginia Kambani and Jaime Azpiazu, shared profound reflections on the challenges of global health, underscoring FUNIBER’s commitment to issues with international impact.
UNIC Rector Dr. Carlos Martínez thanked FUNIER for its support and highlighted how this scientific conference reinforces the university’s role as a driver of change in the community. For his part, Dr. Fernando Maia, president of the Instituto Superior Politécnico do Bié (ISPB), opened the event with a lecture on the importance of scientific research in national development.
The event included a diverse program that covered thematic lectures, cultural presentations, book exhibitions, a health fair with free medical services such as blood sugar and malaria testing, and activities promoted by the university’s various faculties. These initiatives not only strengthened the link between academia and the community, but also reflected the positive impact of the education promoted by FUNIBER.
The voice of students and professionals
Adalberto Gervásio, a fourth-year student in the Bachelor of Law program, highlighted: “This academic conference will contribute significantly to the student community by promoting knowledge and facilitating the exchange of experiences between students and professionals. We know that a scientific conference involves not only students, but also scientific entities, such as book authors. It was a very enriching experience from which I learned a lot.“
António Cambinda, a student in the Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration and Management, also shared his impression: ”It is a very important activity for the academic world, as it brings together several faculties with a single purpose: science. This meeting allows for reconciliation and the practice of knowledge among all.” He added that his expectations were fully met.
Mário Diniz, a student in the Bachelor’s Degree in Nutrition, highlighted the benefits of interacting with other universities: “Students will benefit greatly from this scientific conference, as they will have the opportunity to exchange experiences and discuss sensitive issues with other institutions, which also contribute their insights.”
The event was also attended by Angolan journalist Sérgio Rodrigues, a prominent figure on Angola’s public television channel (TPA). In an interview, he expressed his satisfaction at participating in the event and praised UNIC’s scientific and educational capabilities, stating: “If possible, I would like my children to study here.”
With this conference, FUNIBER reaffirms its commitment to quality academic training, the development of innovative projects, and the creation of spaces for exchange that benefit both the university community and society in general.
